The effects and complications associated with cisplatin and peplomycin combination chemotherapy (CP therapy) are reported. Nine patients with head and neck cancer were treated as follows: cisplatin (75 mg/body) was administered by intravenous infusion continuously for 24 h, followed by continuous peplomycin (5 mg/body) intravenous infusion for 5 h per day for 2 or 6 days. A complete response (CR) was attained in 2 patients and a partial response (PR) in 5. Complications observed were: leukocytopenia (7), anemia (6), nausea or vomiting (4), renal disorder (4), fever (2), increased serum transaminase levels (6) and hair loss (3). It is concluded that CP therapy was effective and safe as neo-adjuvant treatment for patients with head and neck cancer.
