In an attempt to define the relationship between tumor size and survival, the records of 307 patients with renal cell carcinoma were analyzed. Larger tumors were associated with a worse survival in T1-2 patients. When T1-2 patients were divided according to a tumor size of 70 mm, there was a statistically significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.01). There was no statistically significant difference between T1 and T2 patients divided according to a tumor size of 25 mm (p = 0.15). It would thus seem to be more appropriate to divide T1 and T2 patients into two groups according to a tumor size of 70 mm rather than 25 mm.
