Abstract

The analog devices and customized digital circuits of wireless devices are being replaced by general-purpose programmable devices, and the technology that enables wireless devices to be reconfigured merely by modifying software has become a major focus of attention. This paper reviews the concept of, history of research and development of, and recent trends in software radio. Its wide area of application is described, and issues with regard to the system, architecture, and devices are summarized.
