Abstract
The influence of partial substitution of La for Bi on the superconductivity of Bi4Ca3Sr3Cu4Oy (y = undetermined) is investigated by DC resistance (R) and AC susceptibility (χ) measurements and compared with the behaviour in the corresponding Eu and Gd substituted specimens. The results suggest that La suppresses superconductivity much faster than Eu and Gd substituents. We propose that the depression of superconductivity by La is not simply due to disorder, but due to the presence of extended 4f electrons.
