Abstract
This article reviews the current status of real-time operating systems and software development environments for computers being used for measurements and control, focusing on their functions, implementation technologies and standards. A detailed description is given on VxWorks as an example of a real-time OS product already on the market. Also reviewed is the link between VxWorks and MATLAB-SIMULINK, a CAD tool for the control system, as an example of an integrated Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tool.
