Abstract

A control scheme was proposed earlier which solves problems associated with thyristor-controlled variable inductors, and is very useful for reactive power compensation. The basic principle of this control scheme to turn on thyristors at asymmetrical control angles is outlined and compared with conventional and UM-type variable inductors. The harmonic suppression characteristics and the required capacitors of reactor and thyristors are discussed. An example is given of the circuit reducing the 5th and 7th harmonic currents.
