Measurement management of rock slope monitoring using DDA

Abstract

The prediction of slope failures and landslides and the prevention of resultant damages require the establishment of sound slope behavior monitoring technique. Recently, the measurement technique greatly progresses, for example by using measurement equipment called MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) utilizing nanotechnology and vision metrology. However, in the measurement for rock slopes, it is difficult to estimate slope behavior from measurement results because every risky location of a rock slope has a specific failure mode, and we cannot fully avoid or minimize the damage caused by slope hazards. This paper presents an example of monitoring of rock slopes using a combination of state-of-the-art instrumentation using MEMS technology and the warning criterion simulated by DDA analysis. This paper argues that the proposed system can serve as an effective method to eliminate slope hazards Asian countries are facing.
