from two O atoms at the outside of the layer. The Aln ,Bln , and E~ modes are Raman active and the A2u and E u modes are infrared active. The mode assignments are as follows. The 233 cm -I Alg mode observed in the (z, z) and (x', x') spectra is the z-directional vibration of Pr atoms. The 287 cm -I BI~ mode in the (x', y') spectra is the z-directlonal vibration of out-of-plane O atoms. The 165 and 474 cm -I Eg modes in the (x, z) spectra is the in-plane vibrations of Pr and O atoms, respectively. The correspondence of these phonon energies to those of Nd2CuO 4 is as follows; 233 cm -1Alo in Pr2CuO 4 to 230 cm -I in NCO, 287 cm -I ~ig to 344 cm -I, and 474 cm -I Eg to 494 cm-l. 7 Acknowledgment - This work was supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas "Mechanism on Superconductivity" from the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, Japan.

N2 - The spin excitations and the lattice vibrations in the insulator phase of the electronic superconductor Pr2CuO4 were investigated by wide-range Raman spectroscopy. The origin of the anomalous magnon spectra as in the case of the hole superconducting cuprates are assigned to the four-spin cyclic exchange interactions. The obtained two-spin superexchange integral J is 1040 cm-1. The phonon energies are 233 cm-1 in Alg, 287 cm-1 in Blg, and 165 and 474 cm-1 in Eg.
