Abstract
Purpose: To report 6 cases of retinal arterial macroaneurysm with submacular hematoma and macular hole. Cases: This study was made on 6 eyes of 6 cases of retninal arterial macroaneurysm who received vitreous surgery during the past 40 months. The series comprised one male and 5 females. The age ranged from 76 to 82 years. Surgery was performed within 2 weeks after presumed onset. Findings: All the 6 eyes showed macular hole and submacular hematoma continuous with the macroaneurysm. The distance between the fovea and macroaneurysm was less than 1.2 disc diameters. Final visual acuity was 0.5 or better in 5 eyes. Conclusion: These cases illustrate that presence of macular hole is not necessarily a prognostic factor for poor visual outcome. Macular hole may have formed due to expression of submacular hematoma.
