Abstract
A study of the extended x-ray absorption fine structure of sodium borate glasses containing 1 mol% NiO gave a Ni-O bond length of 1.99-2.04 A depending upon the composition of the glass. It indicated that the coordination number of the Ni2+ ion begins to change at 15-20 mol% Na2O, with a marked decrease in the nearest Ni-O bond length. It appears that the suggestion that Ni2+ ions are present in fivefold as well as fourfold coordination gives a satisfactory explanation for the present data.
