Line broadenings of Al Kα, X-ray fluorescence spectra and Al 2s and 2p X-ray photoelectron spectra

Abstract

The origins of the line broadenings of the Kα1,2 X-ray emission spectra and the 2s and 2p X-ray photoelectron spectra are described for aluminium compounds and metal. On comparison of the X-ray emission spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectra, it is concluded that the main source of the line broadenings of X-ray photoelectron spectra, from one compound to another, is not "the lifetime effect" but a combination of an effect associated with a mixture of many chemical states in the sample and a charge-up effect; the major factor of the line broadenings of the Kα, X-ray emission line is multivacancy (shake-off) satellites within the main lines.
