Abstract

The large-cluster effect on the Cu 2p X-ray photoemission spectrum (XPS) for quasi-one-dimensional Cu-O systems, such as Sr2CuO3, CuGeO3 and LiCuO2, is discussed. Recent experiments clearly show that the line shape of the main peak (d10L(Combining low line)) differs for these systems, although it must be a structureless narrow peak for all of them within the framework of a CuO4 cluster model analysis. It is shown that whether the Cu-O-Cu bond angle is 90° or 180° is a key factor in discussing the Cu 2p main-line shape as well as the magnetic coupling between the Cu spins.
