Inelastic neutron scattering study of the lattice dynamics in CuGeO3

Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering study has been performed on various phonon branches of CuGeO3 single crystal. The coupling mode between LA and LO branches along the [001] direction was observed near 23 meV at (0,0,2.2) position. Anomalous broad scattering with a peak near 21 meV and FWHM about 20 meV was measured on the line between (0,0,2.3) and (0,0,2.5). TO phonon branch along the [001] direction becomes softer near zone center but the energy is independent of temperature.
