Abstract
We evaluated 111 patients with rheumatoid arthritis regarding ocular complications. Keratoconjunctivitis sicca was present in 19 patients, 17%, of whom 6 were free of objective symptoms. Scleritis was present in 1 patient, 1 %. Patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca showed significantly higher levels of rheumatoid factor and immunoglobulin M and lower levels of HDL cholesterol than those without. There were no differences in Lansbury index, C reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in both groups. Ophthalmological follow up in patients with rheumatoid arthritis is recommended for the early detection of ocular complications and for monitoring the systemic course of the disease.
