Abstract
The maximum attainable pressure in an unsupported opposed-anvil apparatus is estimated as about 1000 GPa for an unsupported diamond anvil cell with a perfect crystalline diamond, and 180-280 GPa with a diamond of ordinary quality. When the diamond anvils are laterally supported in a multiple-anvil system, both the attainable pressure and the volume of the pressure cell are substantially increased.
