FORMATION OF YBa//2Cu//3O//x BY PERITECTIC REACTION.

Abstract

The decomposition process on heating and crystallization from a liquid on cooling for high Tc superconductor YBa//2Cu//3O//x(x approximately 7) have been studied through thermal analysis, microstructural observations and compositional and X-ray analyses. On heating, YBa//2Cu//3O//x decomposes at 993 degree C in air to Y//2BaCuO//5 and a liquid due to an incongruent melting. On cooling, YBa//2Cu//3O//x crystallizes around the primary crystal Y//2BaCuO//5 from a liquid as a result of a peritectic reaction. YBa//2Cu//3O//x also grew markedly in the sample cooled slowly to 760 degree C from 1200 degree C.
