Abstract
The electronic structure of a nominally trivalent Cu compound, NaCuO2, is discussed through the detailed analysis of the multiplet structures of the Cu 2p-XAS (X-ray absorption spectroscopy) and XPS (X-ray photoemission spectroscopy) spectra. It is shown that the ground state is a local singlet state. 1A1 as in low spin Cu3+ compounds but the charge is to a large extent on the oxygen in O 2p orbitals.
