Abstract

To make it clear whether termites have the ability to degrade natural lignin or not, a lower termite (Coptotermes formosanus Sinaki) was fed on Japanese red pine. Food and faecal materials were compared using solid-state CP/MAS 13C NMR. The results revealed that the lower termite and their gut symbionts had little or no ability to degrade 'natural' lignin.
