Abstract
The authors have studied the effect of reversible extraction of Mn on the e.s.r. signal II belonging to the secondary electron donor (Z+) and the doublet e.s.r. signal of reduced pheophytin (pheoτ) and the plastquinone complex with iron (PCτ-Fe2+) in the oxygen evolving preparations of photosystem II (p.s. II). It is shown that after complete removal of Mn from the p.s. II preparations both the dark and photo-induced e.s.r. signal II and the doublet e.s.r. signal persist. It is concluded that Mn is not a component of the secondary electron donor Z of photosystem II and that its complete extraction does not disturb the exchange interaction between the anion radical pheoτ and the reduced complex PCτ-Fe2+.
