Energy gap structure in the binary superconductor M B2 ( M = Nb and Mg)

Tunneling spectroscopy measurements have been carried out using a break-junction technique for the AlB2-type superconductors NbB 2 (Tc≈7-9 K) and MgB2 (Tc = 39 K). The representative gap value for NbB2 is 2Δ(4.2 K) = 2.4±0.2 meV, from which the gap ratio of 2Δ(0)/kBT c≈4.4 is obtained. Such a strong-coupling ratio is comparable to the ratio 2Δ(0)/kBTc≥5 for MgB2, thereby indicating the similar superconducting mechanisms between them.
