EFFECT OF TIME-PERIODIC HEATING ON THE STABILITY OF A HORIZONTAL DOUBLE-DIFFUSIVE FLUID LAYER.

Abstract

The effect of the time-periodic temperature oscillation upon the stability of a horizontal fluid layer in the presence of a stable salinity gradient is studied theoretically using the Galerkin method. The results of numerical calculation show that the critical Rayleigh number Ra//c becomes minimum at a certain positive value of the saline Rayleigh number Rs. The destabilizing effect of the salinity stratification is found to be due to the coupling of the oscillating basic temperature field with the salinity disturbance.
