Effect of Chemisorbed Water on the Two-Dimensional Condensation of Water and Argon on SrF2

Abstract

The surface properties of SrF2 that has strongly adsorbed H2O were investigated by measurement of the adsorption isotherms of Ar and H2O and of the surface H2O content and by IR spectra. The surface of the sample was found to be uniform for the adsorption of Ar and H2O; that is, a two-dimensional condensation of each adsorbate occurs on it. Pretreatment of the sample at higher temperatures and successive rehydration largely affect the surface homogeneity as determined by the adsorption isotherms of Ar and H2O. When the surface is pretreated at elevated temperatures, the amount of chemisorbed H2O decreases, which results in an increase in homogeneous area for Ar adsorption and a decrease in homogeneous area for H2O adsorption. The successive rehydration of the surface through exposure to H2O vapor recovers the homogeneous area for H2O adsorption, accompanied by the reduction of the homogeneous area for Ar adsorption. The well-developed (100) face of the SrF2 crystals was found to be responsible for these phenomena.
