"Devil's staircase"-type phase transition in NaV2O5 under high pressure

A synchrotron radiation x-ray diffraction analysis was performed to study the devil's staircase type phase transition in quarter-filled spin-ladder NaV2O5 compound. The analysis was performed at low temperature and high pressure conditions. The axial next nearest neighbour Ising (ANNNI) model was used to reproduce the observed temperature and pressure dependence of modulation wave number. The analysis suggested that the proposed model efficiently described the phase transition of the complicated charge-lattice-spin coupled NaV2O5 system.
