Abstract

Multiwire proportional chambers with 1 mm-pitch anode wires and carbon-coated cathode planes were constructed and used to monitor a high-intensity beam. The chambers have been operated with more than 98% efficiency over one year long experiments and showed no deterioration after an injection of 10**1**2 particles. The chamber system has been used to measure the momenta as well as the trajectories of incident particles on an event-by-event basis. A typical momentum resolution (FWHM) of 0. 5% was achieved.
