We wish to thank Dr. H. Shimizu and Dr. K. Ikeda (RIKEN Wako Institute), Mr. S. Aoyama (Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd.), Dr. N. Tagawa (Kansai Univ.) for many helpful suggestions during the course of the work, and are also indebted to Mr. H. Takemoto (Ryukoku Univ.) and Mr. N. Hishida (Spindle Device Lab.) for their cooperation. This work was sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Japan (No. 16760113).

N2 - Tribological phenomena usually occur at a solid-solid interface. New approaches with neutron scattering methods are applied to get information on a state at a metal-metal interface in this paper. Surface profiles and oil film thickness at a metal-metal interface are measured by neutron reflectometry, and microscopic structures of simple lubricants are observed by neutron diffractometry.
