Applicability of suction stress for unsaturated shear strength

Abstract

This paper examined the applicability of the suction stress (ps) on the shear strength behaviors for saturated and unsaturated soils based on the results of the past studies. The notion of the suction stress was introduced and explained in detail. This paper also showed each application of the suction stress for the three kinds of test, that is, the test results of triaxial compression test, unconfined compression test and direct shear test. Through this examination, it could be shown that the shear strength behaviors for saturated and unsaturated soils could be explained by means of the application of the suction stress as an effective stress component from low to high confining pressures regardless of the testing types.
