A study on predicting the lifetime of timber bridges

Abstract

In this study, we regard 5 factors as agents of decay for timber bridges. They are material durability and antiseptic methods, climate, structures, design, and construction. And we assign marks to the influence of these factors for durability. The lifetime can be calculated by substituting each mark of 5 factors to the equation that we suggest in this study. The validity of equations and calculations are verified with some examples of timber bridges in Japan. As compared with some examples, results of calculation are almost the same lifetime as actual data. We regard the prediction method as valid in the range of examples because the margin is relatively small.
