A scheduling method to reduce interruption time in broadcast and communication integration environments

Abstract

Due to the recent popularization of broadcast and communication integration environments, streaming delivery of continuous media data is attracting much attention. In broadcast and communication integration environments, the server divides the data into multiple segments and delivers them to users using both broadcasting and on-demand delivery. The user reduces the interruption time by receiving the second half of the segment in broadcast mode and the remaining segments in communication mode. In conventional scheduling methods, the server reduces the interruption time by scheduling the segments using both broadcast and communication modes considering the margin time between the current time and the next interruption. However, as the number of watching users increases, since the delivery time of the desired segment increases, the interruption time increases. In this paper, we propose a Shortest Extra Time considering User Behavior (SET-UB) method that reduces the interruption time using the node-relay webcast in broadcast and communication integration environments. In our method, since a supernode with all segments delivers the segments between nodes, the server can reduce the interruption time. In the computer evaluation, the interruption time under the proposed method was reduced by 29.1% compared to the conventional method.
