Abstract

We report a 53-year-old male with leiomyoma in the bottom of the tongue. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging suggested a benign tumor localized in the oropharynx. The patient underwent extirpation of the tumor by a cervical approach. Since the surgery, he has been followed up for six months and to date there is no sign of recurrence. Histopathological and immunohistological studies revealed the tumor to be a vascular leiomyoma. Vascular leiomyoma in the head and neck region is a rare disease. This is the first report of vascular leiomyoma arising underneath the tongue, according to a critical review of the world literature up to 1997.
